Korea’s Elegant Heritage: Hanbok Designer Hwang Sun-tae

Designer Hwang Sun-tae (황선태) reinterprets the traditional elegance of Hanbok through a contemporary lens, continuing the legacy of his mother as a second-generation Hanbok artisan. From creating custom pieces for well-known celebrities to introducing Hanbok across the world through Sejong Institute’s cultural programs, her work bridges heritage and modernity. In this interview, we explore her creative journey and unique design philosophy.

Hello Designer Hwang Sun‑tae,

Could you please introduce yourself to our readers and tell us about your journey with Hanbok design?My mother, Moon Gye-ok (문계옥), was part of the first generation of Hanbok artisans, and I am continuing this path as part of the second generation.

Your Hanbok designs blend elegance and modernity. What values guide you the most when creating each piece?The traditional elements and values that Hanbok inherently holds are most important to me.

What do you think makes Hanbok timeless and still relevant in today's global fashion scene?Hanbok is no longer confined to tradition; it evolves with the times, transitioning from a heritage to a cultural phenomenon and becoming a vital genre within contemporary fashion. The emergence of a new generation of global designers inspired by Hanbok also adds to its significance.

Which part of the Hanbok-making process is most fulfilling for you—sketching, fabric selection, or seeing someone wear it?I feel the greatest sense of fulfillment when my designs come to life, are beautifully worn, and the wearer expresses high satisfaction. That’s when I truly feel rewarded as a designer.

What kind of reactions do you get from foreigners when they wear Hanbok for the first time during Sejong Institute events?

They all say they feel like the main character in a story.

You also teach how to make bokjumeoni (Korean traditional pouches). What cultural meaning does this accessory carry?In Korean quilting and embroidery traditions, the bokjumeoni carries great significance. As an independent accessory, the pouch symbolizes sharing blessings—carrying fortune not only for oneself but to be shared with others.

Do you have a favorite Hanbok you’ve designed, perhaps one that reflects your story or emotions deeply?

The Hanbok I designed for Suzy as part of the 2023 Hanbok Wave project holds a special place in my heart.

If you could design a Hanbok inspired by a specific country or culture you’ve encountered on tour, which one would it be and why?

India, for the inspiration drawn from its culture and vibrant colors.

Is there anything you would like to share with our readers about Hanbok—perhaps a message, a hope, or a feeling?

Hanbok is not a difficult or heavy garment. It is a comfortable outfit that anyone can wear with ease.
